Starting Visual Basic

On Friday, our teacher explained and went through with us step by step how to get started on Visual Basic.
It was luckily already installed.
So this is the process to make a new project:
1. File
2.New Project
3.Windows Forms Application
4.Name the Project
Then came:
- object
-property
-events
Explain in each detail:
OBJECT
So once the project opens, it displays a medium sized box and this is named Form 1.
When talking about Objects, it means everything in the toolbox.
Firstly I created two buttons.
* Button 1
* Buttone 2
Then I added a label
* Lable 1

PROPERTIES
When talking about properties, it means the properties of the buttons, the label and the form. So I am able to rename the button and the label as well as the Form. So now my buttons are named:
*Mr Button 1
*Mr Button 2
*Mr Label
As for the background of each object. For my buttons, I went to Forecolour, there were quite boring colours, but if you go to Custom there are much more "colorful" colors.
The for my label, I did the same thing as I did for my button. Another property I cahnged was the font, font style as well as font size.
As for my form, you could change the colour of the background or could insert a background color, I decided to insert a picture of the sunset.

EVENTS
When it came doing this, well the whole thing just, how could you say it? - Stuffed Up. Basically you had a code, for button 1, button 2 as well as Label 1. So when you clicked on say for example Button 1, Label 1 would disappear and if you pressed Button 2 it would reappear. Quite cool!
We also have to add a radio button, but I havent got to do that, so when I do I obviously will blog all about it.
Anyways, since mine didnt work, as when you clicked the "play" button, some error message would come out. I closed my whole project, saved it and then tried to make a new one. Then since I had so many projects saved, I went to the file Of Visual Basic and deleted these files. Then when I went back to open a new project,my solution explorer didnt open. Then the bell went so I would have to re-install Visual Basic on that. So yeah I learnt many things but unfortunately was unable to make mine work.

So today (Monday) I tried again and now I just have to add the code, and it should work, it will work.
Note: I must get a blank CD and put Visual Basic onto that so I am able to work on it at home.
So yeah that was my first go on Visual Basic.

Selection and Repitition

Algorithm
-sequence
-selection
-repetition
Sometimes solving a problem involves making a decision between two or more options and this process is called
- Selection

In "plain English"
1. MOVING THROUGH A SET OF TRAFFIC LIGHTS

1. When u see traffic lights approaching
a) if its green, continue moving along, either going straight, left or right.
b) if its orange, [and you think its safe and you can make it, just speed up a little, * dont take any chances*]
c) if its red, slow down and stop before the line and wait until it turns green.
NOTE: Even if its green and orange and you are going, make sure to look out for any cars turning, left or right.

2. Deciding whether to take an umbrella to school

1. In the morning or the day before check the weather report for the next day.
a) if it says its going to rain, then pack your umbrella
b) if it says its going to be cloudy all day, then still pack your umbrella ( weather reports aren't always right)
c) if it says its going to be sunny in the morning and cloudy in the afternoon (or vice versa), still take your umbrella.
d) if it says its going to be a beautiful, sunny day then leave your umbrella at home, but make sure to check in the morning that it looks like a nice clear blue sky.

3. Giving a student an A, B or C in their test

1.
a)Look at your marking criteria, if you have one and go according to that.
b)If it is a test like math
- 80%-90% ( A), [if their mark is like 78 or 79% be generous and give them an A, if they have done well in their other tests as well.]
- 60%-80% (B)
- 40%-50% (C)

Often an algorithm will often require you to repeat a task in order to solve a problem; when this is done in an algorithm the structure is called repetition.

In "plain English"
1.Adding the correct amount of cordial to water to make a drink

1. Get desired flavor cordial out.
2. Fill a glass ( or more) of cool water from the tap.
3. Get lid off the cordial
4. Place amount of cordial, about half a cup/more/less, whatever amount you desire.
Repeat all over, for how many cordial drinks you want.

2. Filling a bucket with water

1. Get bucket
2. Go into an area with a tap.
3. Place bucket underneath tap
4. On tap, not too high.
5. Stop until you are happy with amount of water
6. If too much water, tip water out.
7. If by mistake you have tipped too much water out refill water.
[Steps 6 and 7 repeat, until you are satisfied with the amount of water]

3. Blowing up a balloon.

1. Get balloon ( whatever color you want)
2. Blow into balloon, until you can't blow anymore.
3. If you want balloon bigger, keep blowing.
4. Until to you are happy with size of balloon, stop
Note: Dont make balloon to big, may just pop.
5. Tie up the end of balloon or let the air out.
[Repeat steps 2 and 3]

Term 3- New Term New Work- What is an algorithm

What is an Algorithm?
An unambiguous set of steps, which when performed correctly by a processor, will result in a process being carried out in a finite time.

1. What two properties of the algorithm enable it to correctly describe the solution to the problem of making a cup of coffee? What is it that makes an algorithm correct?(Hint: what would happen if you swapped step "6" and step "2"?)

Two properties are:
- the listing of steps
- the order in which the steps are in.
An algorithm is correct simply if the order of the steps get the result you want in the end.
Hint: If you swapped step 6 and step 2- there is nothing really wrong with it, it just wouldn't make sense stirring boiling water and if you place coffee at the end, while your sugar, boiling water and milk are already added, then when you add coffee, if not stirred it wouldn't taste very "normal"(of course some people like it this way..maybe)!

2. Define Algorithms for the following processes.
POSTING A LETTER
1. Get letter
2. Place it in an envelope
3. Go to the post office and get a stamp
4. Place stamp on top right corner of envelope with letter in it.
5. Find the appropriate post box (local mailing, national or international)
6. Open the handle of the box and slip the envelope into the slot of the post office box.

MAKING TOAST
1. Get bread out with butter, jam etc... ( if wanted) as well as a plate and a butter knife.
2. Place how many slices wanted onto plate
3. Place 2 slices at a time in toaster, adjust settings.
4. Wait a few minutes
5. Once toast pops up be careful that it is not hot and place it on plate.
6. Apply spread of your choice
7. Eat Up

Calling a friend on the phone
1. If you dont remember their number get your phone book or ask someone else.
2. Dial phone number into phone.
3. Wait...listen to the dial tone...
4. Whoever picks up ( if its not your friend, ask to speak to your friend, if it is your friend, start talking about whatever you called them about.
5. [Another situation: If your friend is not at home, leave a message or call back]
6. Gossip away!

Finished Assignment

Unable To Load Page

Downloadable Songs

My Family Page

IST Careers Page

Celebrities Page

My Flowchart

On Friday in class, I continued to work on my assignment. My videos, that was my main problem, what I had done is that I wanted trailers, on my Celebrities page, but I wanted them to be down loadable,so I recorded with camera the trailer, put it on my computer and saved it to my USB, when I got to school and placed it,
a) the quality wasn't that great
b) it wasn't downloadable.
I asked my teacher, and he said I dont necessarily need a downloadable video, but I wasn't ready to give up!

On Saturday, a problem occurred which really scared me. Before I decided to place all my files into folders, example, Music into one, pictures into another etc....
Now when I opened it up on Frontage, some of the pictures I placed were showing crosses, and for a few of my pages my background wasn't showing. That scared the hell out of me. but I calmed down and just took all the files and made it into one big folder, saved it as My Website 2, and opened it up in Frontage and just added, the pictures that weren't showing, luckily I had them saved and my background. Took sometime and was unnecessary but I managed. Anyways.... so I also scanned some photos from my photo album so I can put it on my About Me page. I also went onto Itunes and found free trailers to download, I was soo happy, and it was in such great quality, so I downloaded 4 trailers and saved them. This time though I sent them to zipped folders, copied and pasted into my main Website folder, hyperlinked it and it worked, so that was great!!!

Then on Saturday, I continued on my IST Careers, finished it, added pictures, and I also decided to place some downloadable songs, so I zipped the chosen songs and hyperlinked them. Now every page had a menu, accept for some reason, my family page, when I put a menu, it didn't work. I was even decided to put a different type of menu, but noticed it wouldn't look that nice. Then then I noticed something, I changed my background color to white and then it started working, VERY WEIRD..... I wanted a colored background, but it still looks nice. So all my menus are there. Also on Sunday, I added something to my storyboard, I added a little description about each page. So then I saved my website on my USB. Then when I placed the CD in my laptop, it didn't work, it said something about function, so I tried it on another laptop and it worked there, so I placed my USB and burned it onto the CD. Now I tried it on my browser, and guess what? The menu's weren't working, because I had copied and pasted the link to each page when it was on my USB, when I should have wrote the link as (page name.html), so I decided to do that school.

On Monday at IST, I changed each link, it worked, so that was great. BUT my downloadable videos, wouldn't show that Open or Save box and those downloadable songs, wouldn't open because I hadn't saved the music file into my Website folder. Now this website had been saved onto my S drive, so I decided to save it as My Website 3 on my USB but when I was copying and pasting it, my USB ran out of memory, So I had to place some files onto my S Drive and then the bell went, luckily I had lunch. At lunch I saved my website on my USB so I can work on it at home.
On Monday night I added my music files to my Website folder.
Tuesday Lunchtime, my downloadable files weren't displaying their usual open or save box, I dont know why, but then again I decided to mention on my page to the user, that if they want to download they have to right click and click "Save target as" so that still makes it downloadable. I also added a background to my Unable to Load Page. Everything else was working Yay. Luckily our teacher let us hand it in on Wednesday. I definitely would have it by then

Tuesday night, I added some pictures and a new background, added a new application to my IST page, its called "Spin the wheel" so the user can click and like out of the list of website I have given , it would choose one and the user will be directed to it. I just added some finishing touches, saved it, burned it onto my disk, checked it everything was working Yay except for my two downloadable word documents, when I clicked save some message came, that it couldn't save, but I decided to try it on my school computer.

Wednesday IST lesson, when I placed my CD in the computer, my website wasn't there, I was shocked, luckily I had it on my USB. Now on this CD I had my first saved website which I had written onto the CD, but when I tried deleting it, it wouldn't delete and when I placed my finished website onto the CD, it had no memory, so I got a new CD, copied and pasted my website onto it and checked everything and IT WORKED.
I was soooooo glad, so I was finished after a term of hard work, I was very happy with my end result. :)
Finished IST Assignment number 2 :):)
